Slow network

I've set up a small 4 computer home network sharing an internet connection
with a broadband router. All the computers see eachother on the network, but
accessing the shared contents on one system from another is excrutiatingly
slow. Whenever I open the window to see all the computers within the
workgroup, it takes a good 3 or 4 minutes to finally show all the computers.
I have played games over this network with what appears to be no speed
problems, does anyone have any idea of what this might be? thanks.

A hint as to the operating systems in use would have been helpful, as one
possibility is you have a mix of default protocols in use.

Do you use an LMHOSTS file?

Oh my gosh, I can't believe that I forgot to mention that.. It's XP Home on
all.. and as for your question, I do not know, I'll have to research that
and get back to you.

I believe that a LMHOSTS file is in use although it had a file extenstion..

There is no problem, because MS get rid of netbios in XP discovery process
takes more time.
To speed up try \\<ip_address>\share in run.. from start, or create map
network drive.
