Our network (Win 2000 server) has noticeably slowed down in the last few
months.

even with Norton antivirus corporate edition we are being affected by
viruses (and possibly hacking)

there are a lot of processes running with the same name

eg. svchost.exe
explorer.exe

we had slammer bring our DSL router down a few months ago.

I also feel that the number of processes running has increased in the last
12 months.

I have spent a fortune in consultants, without arriving to any positive
improvement.

What is the best approach to check our network?

can you advise on any utility that can offer an analysis of the network
without costing a fortune.

Having working NAV CE you shouldn't be affected by the viruses.
Check obvious: events log, spyware, adware, and trojans www.lavasoftusa.com,
security.kolla.de, and www.trojanscan.com.
If the server was seriously damaged by any virus or trojan (been hacked),
you'd better reinstall the server OS from scratch and reconsider the network
protection.
