I got win xp pro on both machines connected to a dlink
router. they can see each other but trying to access each
others' files is sooo sloow!!! also transferring a 1MB
file from pc1 to pc2 took about 10mins!!!

my home lan is therefore useless because i cannot tranfer
files over the network because it is so slow!!

how do i fix this ?

This is going to sound completely nuts. But, try unchecking the "Use
Fast User Switching" in the logon options.

I wrestled with a similar problem for days. My XP 2.2ghz IBM R40 p4
took 37 times LONGER to copy a directory of files from a networked
host than a w95 400mhz PII. After getting rid of the "Fast user
switching", XP was almost as fast as Windows 95. (XP Bloatware!!)
