Slow Network Performance

I have a client running 2 Windows 2000 Servers in a
Domain Setting. There are approximately 50 Workstations
all runnning windows 98.

They have recently started to add Windows XP workstations
to the network and are running into slow network
performace with them. We have tried to plug the machines
into different locations, directly into the hubs /
switches and still we are running into problems. Large
excell spreadsheets that used to take 10 or 15 seconds to
open on Win98 units now can take upwards of 60seconds.
Reports in the accounting software that yake 2-3 minutes
on the windows 98 machines take upwards of 4-5 minutes on
the XP systems. Additionaly, they are running terminal
services. If the XP client connects via terminal services
it works fine, but we would like to find a solution.

The DNS server seems to be configured propperly, we have
tried multiple machines in the same place with different
chipsets and NICs.

The accounting package is a custom written package which
uses Pervasive SQL as it's database engine.

Again the only machines that are having this problem are
the Windows XP units.

Thank you in advance for any assistance this group may be
able to provide.

Jason P. Kelly

I have also had this problem with windows XP. One thing
that may help is a program called tcp doctor. There are
some things related to the packet delay in windows XP
that is different from previous versions of windows. Of
course that may not be relavent either, I tried pc to pc
networking with a crossover cable and 2 XP boxes and they
took forever to transfer files. But check the packet
delay in the registry. Usually that's set WAY too high.
If you have any other questions you can e-mail me. I
don't remember the specific key, but I will have it the
next time I reformat.
