Hello, I have a 100Mhz network with a server running windows 2000 and
desktops running xp professional. Every day, at no certain time and with no
certain pattern the save as, open, save files to the server brings the
machines to a grinding halt. When i click save as it takes about 5 minutes
before the dialog box propagates and i can chose a drive to save to. even
saving an alredy created and then modified file to the same location on the
server takes a very long time and most of the time i just have to reboot the
desktop in order to start working again. i have read loads of articles about
this proble and followed all suggestions, even modified registry but it has
not made any difference. I am deparate to find a solution. is it a Microsoft
design fault (one article said it was); is there a fix for it. Please help
Thank you! Regards,

Not likely. I was probably written by an MS Hater.

The most likey cause in my opinion is either virus of spyware.

Dear phillip,

i can assure you that my machine is not infected with any virus nor does it
have any spyware. The machines are protected by Mcafee corporate anit-virus
software and anti-spyware program. there are other windows 2000 workstations
connected to the same sertver and these do not experience such problems. it
is only with Windows XP machines that this problems occurs.

Hi Monzie I have the same problem. I have a network with 10 computers on it
with earler Windows operating systems and they run fine access to the network
is instantanious. I upgraded to windows xp professional and it takes forever
to access the network and manuver and access files on the xp machines. I am
ready to give There must be some switch or software fix that I cannot find.
I do not have a virus our network people have scrubbed all of our units and
we are up to date with virus software. If anyone knows how to fix this
please respond.

thank you
Chuck

Thanks Airman, I am going to try this in the afternoon and I pray to God it
will solve the problem.

Regards,

I am going to disable NETBIOS over TCP/IP on all netwrok cards as suggested
by Airman. I'll let you know if it solved it!

Fingers crossed. it is so frustrating!

Hello again,

i have just disabled NETBIOS on the Win XP Machine and the Win2000 server
and i could not map any of the drives on the server after logging in. It told
me that my domain name was a NETBIOS name and as NETBIOS was disabled I could
not restore all connetions to the server.

Any idea how to get round this?

Thanks

Thanks philip,

Is there any other solution to this problem? I now have three different
clients experiencing exactly the same problem on their windows xp machines
and windows 2000 servers. I am getting to the point of scrapping windows xp
and putting windows 2000 back on the workstations. You must know what was
done differently in win xp and what might be causing this problem. I don't
undertand why we are allowed to buy software from microsoft and then are left
to fix the bugs ourselves. Please help

Thanks

You can't disable Netbios unless you want lots of things to not work.

Philip,

So is there any other way to resolve this issue? i now have 3 different
clients with the same configuration and experiencing the same problems. I am
getting to the point of srapping the workstartions and installing windows
2000 software on them as I know it works. You must know what was done
differently in Widnows XP Pro and what might be causing this. I don't
understand how Microsoft releases a software (win xp) gets everyone to
upgrade and then leaves us to fix the bugs. I am sure we wouldn't be happy if
car manufactureres did this to us....

Please help

I am at the end of my tether here

Thanks

If that was the case we would all have the same problem and we are not. I
experienced it once with Windows 2000. It acted like the Common Dialog Box
was having problems building the drive/folder/file listing. I think that I
might have cured it once by reinstalling IE, but that is tough to do if it
is the OEM IE with the OS. I don't have a solution myself and that is why I
hadn't posted anymore along the way until the previous one.

It sill is possible it could be the result of Spyware/Adware or a Virus.

Chuck is having exactly teh same problem; see his message from April 28th.
Looks like I am not the only at mercy of Microsoft's programmers.
Thanks anyway
