Slow network performance on a W2000 SP4 client browsing a
folder, which contains about 5000 word documents each 30 -
50 KB, on a NT4 SP6 server. Network protocol is TCP/IP.
Browsing this folder takes 30 - 50 seconds. This phenomen
does not happen on a W98 client. Browsing this folder takes
just 1 - 2 seconds. What is to do to speed up the W2000
performance?

Check your Protocols, DNS and WINS settings. By default Win98 will have
NetBuie loaded and use WINS as it's primary means of name resolution. While
Win2k will only have loaded TCP\IP and will want to use DNS for Name
Resolution.
You will want all machines using the same setup.
Also Win98 will have loaded SPX by default, if you have no Novel severs then
remove the SPX it will speed up the win98 even more.

Win98 does just have TCP/IP (and nothing else more) as the
network protocol and connects, as all clients, with DHCP to
the server. DHCP is set to automatic mode.
It seems that the problem is somewhere in the different
handling of TCP/IP by Win98 and W2k. Win98 is speedy
enough, W2k is not.
