Slow network in XP

I've been experimenting with Win XP professional for about
a year now. Compared to WIN98SE, the network performance
is excruciatingly slow! I've re-installed 98 and the
performance comes back. I re-install XP and it goes down
the crapper again! This is on 4 computers that otherwise
run XP just fine (DELL XPS 1000, IBM Thinkpad 600E, and
two i810 clones, 600MHz and 700MHz with plenty of
memory). These all run on a 10/100 ethernet home network
with a Netgear router.

What's the deal with networking in XP???

Oh, by the way:

I don't use ICS;
I'm only using TCP/IP (nothing else) although I do have
the NETBIOS overlay;
I use Norton anitvirus but no firewall and all computers
connect to the internet just fine at the maximum cable
speed (3mbps)
I get about 50+Mbps transfers with Win98 and less than 10
(much less) with XP.
????????????????????????

With no firewall ... humm... anything now could be running on your
machines to have messed it up. Turn on a firewall.

Rob:

Thanksfor the suggestion, but it's a clean install and I
do have Norton Antivirus (up-to-date), so I don't think
that's the problem.
