my modem is a dial up type ( outside of bt's broadband range ) and it has
started connecting very slowly..ie 28 kb/sec.........instead of the usual 40
to 45 kb/sec........any ideas would be gratefully recieved as my system is
slow enough already

Try disabling background programs like windows automatic
updates. Also, set port speed to 921600(or highest) and
enable compression and hardware flow control. Also com
port settings to hardware flow control and max bits per
second and,(advanced) max buffer range. If you connection
uses QOS packet scheduler that can be disabled.

.
I used to have that problem too, and when I checked with
my TelCo they told me that they had moved me from a
copper pair to a multiplexer. Being on a multiplexer
will chop up your modem signals so bad they connect a
very low rates. Check with TelCo and see if they have
done this to you. DSL is the best if it is available.
