Machine is an AMD 1 Ghz w/640m RAM; two physical drives w/partitiones.
Drives are faster than the one on my Dell Ispiron 9300.

'C' is a 9.75 GB partition wtih 1.5 GB free space.

Windows and its related are on 'C'; most large applications and their ata
are on D, E, F, etc. Some programs to the tune of 1 GB worth are also on
'C'

Is this small amount of free space choking performance? 1.5 GB free out of
9.75 total?

Best Regards,
Wayne

Wayne, how long has it been since you defragged the hard drive and run
system cleaner? Have you checked for malware?

Pls excuse the ignorance . . . .

System Cleaner? What and found where?
Malware? same (ditto)

Ran Defrag (after I posted the msg), a little bit faster. Meanwhile is the
small amount of free space choking??

Best.

You have way too little space left on your system partition. I wouldn't
install XP on less than a 10GB partition (you're close) although I
think that is still too small - 20GB would really be my minimum - and
I wouldn't let the free space get below 5GB.

I don't know why you've made so many partitions, but you didn't say how
big the drives are either.

Also, check for malware:

Do normal maintenance:

Hi, use these 3 free programs

Clean disk http://www.snapfiles.com/get/sweepi.html

remove too many programs from startup:
http://www.wheresjames.com/index.php?page=startupmgr

remove adware and spyware
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/adaware.html

there are many ways to make your pc work better
but this means finetuning...

if you want details, I am making a page with this as I am updating all my
site
if you want me to tell you when it is ready send me an email here

Understood! (size of partition) Would/could steal space from adjacent 'D';
however, having problems making Partition Magic 8 work - locks up machine.
(Using same PM 8 installed in another machine - can't figure out why
new/additional install on 2nd machine will not work. Any clues?)

Pure PM8 or update (Symantec) to PM8.05???

So I have a dated version of PM8 (newer version nbr applied to an OLD date!
BTW, copyright says 2002! Tells me something, doesn't it?

Still does not answer to reason why is works perfectly with a new DELL
(under XP Media) and locks another machine with XP Home.

_____

Because the two platforms (operating system + machine) are not identical.
Could be problems with
the motherboard
the hard drive(s) [controller, drive surface, file system]
amount of free space
....
Details of messages or circumstances when a procedure does not work are very
helpful in making a diagnosis.

Larger capacity hard drives, all other things being equal, are faster
because the recording density is usually higher.
