Slow loading of Excel and Word

An additional note to the one I posted earlier this
morning. I don't know that this is not normal, but when
I run the task manager, Excel is listed twice when I'm
having the slowness problem.

After a crash, always check Task Manager to see if the Excel.exe (and
Winword.exe) is still in memory. If so, terminate it before attempting to
load the program again.

Outlook is famous for keeping its exe in memory even after closing it.

We have been having the exact same problem on two
different computers running Windows XP Pro. Also very
slow loading with Word 2000. When we changed the
computer dates back to 1/6/04, both programs functioned
fine. Changed computer dates back to 1/8/04 and problems
returned. Used Task Manager to check for winword.exe
still in memory, that was not the problem. We have all
the latest Windows XP and Office updates, just updated
Norton Antivirus and scanned for viruses and Trojan
Horses, nothing detected. Any more ideas, Microsoft?

It could also be your AntiVirus software (AVS), which checks every
auto-loaded Word and Excel files. If you disable the AVS, do they load
faster? If so, you may wish to add Word's ".dot" and Excel's ".xla" file
types from your AVS's exemption list. This could be risky as
virus'/malicious code can be contained within these files.
