Hi

I'm starting to get a bit confused with "Slow link
detection".
What exactly determins if a link is slow or not?
Is it the speed between the client and closest domain
controller, between the client and the closest global
catalogue or.... what?

I have a domain consisting of two sites.
I have a global catalogue in each site.
Slow link detection is on and is set to half of the speed
of what I have between the two sites.

What ever I seem to do at the two sites I receive all
GPOs, my home folder directory is being mapped etc.
I can't see that the "Slow link detection" is kicking in.

Should I remove one of the global catalogues or even the
domain controller at one of the sites?

Regards
Wayne

Hi Matjaz

Thanks for your reply.
It is slowly getting a bit clearer for me.
I have one more questions though...

When "slow link detection" kicks-in, what is affected?
Is it only GPO's or does it affect things like the users
home folder as well (set in the user account properties)?

Cheers
Wayne

If you have sites in place and a local DC in site, then the client will
authenticate to local DC. It will also get its policies from local DC,
because they are replicated to
\\domain.com\sysvol\policies (FRS maintains

Slow link detection affects only GPO's. Here is the list of what is and what
is not affected:
Affected:
- IE Explorer maintenance settings
- SW installations
- Folder redirection
- Scripts
- IP Security
- Disk Quota settings
and always will run: (ignores slow link detection)
- Administrative templates
- Security Settings
- EFS Recovery Settings

Slow link detection won't affect users home folders. You can use DFS with
replica in every site for home folders, so that the clients always connects
to local replica.
