pre-windows xp, (Me, 98, etc.) i had no delay in
accessing a folder on the network that had upwards of
3000 files in it. (used Netbeui) unfortunately, i have to
have this # of files in the folder as it is a DOS program
at work that requires all the files to be in same
directory to work efficiently.

now that all the computers are new dell xp machines using
tcp-ip for network connection, there is a tremendous
delay when accessing the folder via windows
explorer....even a longer delay when accessing thru Word
or Excel.

looks to me like the systems are trying to read each file
every time i access the folder from a network
connection. any suggestions to set the systems to get
rid of this delay would be greatly appreciated.

feel free to respond here or to (e-mail address removed)

thanks

I have the same problem, when windows explorer opens a folder with a large number of files for the first time it takes a long time to display the files in the folder, scrolling takes forever! I did find a third party program however, called Servant Salamander (funny name) that works as a file managment tool like Windows Explorer, but with two panes. I found something interesting in Servant Salamander: it has an option to display simple icons! This makes browsing a folder with a large number of files very VERY fast! I like Servant Salamander and use it every day, the best part is that when I'm in a folder I can type the name of the file I want and the program jumps to that file and it doesn't matter how fast I type, I can even correct my mistakes! In addition it uses two panes, you can copy or move files between the panes, it also has a confirmation window that pops up when moving or copying, pretty cool!

Unfortunately my boss only uses Windows Explorer and he would like to see it fixed

My conclusion is that we need to find a way to turn off or simplify the icons displayed in Windows Explorer

If you find a way of doing this please let me know. In the mean time I'll continue to use Servant Salamander
