I installed XP Pro on a new 320G HD last week, and need to do it again.
However, after 30 minutes it's gotten to the 4% mark. It took less than an
hour last week. What's up? Should I kill it? Maybe I should have used the
quick format available in install.

Something has likely died if you used the same format last time.

Yes.

Wont help if something has died.

Something more or less died. It appears my CD drive got disconnected.
I'm now at 98%.

Just a tip for next time you format. Always select quick format unless you
suspect an issue with the HDD. The only difference between quick and long
is that the long format method scans the HDD for bad sectors and is why it
takes so long. There is no need to do that everytime you format a HDD. All
3rd party partitoning tools use quick format for that reason.
