Recently when opening a directory folder, the response is
VERY slow to actually bring up the folders file list. This
occurs on large folders, ie 1.62gb and some smaller ones
at 11 or so mb.

Are there and settings that can help this ?, I've done a
virus scan, and optimized the drives but no prolems
indicated and no improvement.

Thanks

Doing a DIR from a command prompt may lead you to your problem. If the DIR from CMD displays quickly, then the problem is in explorer. If it displays slowly, then you may have some sort of corruption on the disk and might benefit from a chkdsk /f.

I had a problem once when The location of certain files was changed, explorer.exe would take a long time displaying files that required an icon from those moved files. Each time explorer tried to display those files, it would have to time out on each one separately while looking for it's icon file.

Be wary of CHKDSK on large volumes. You should read articles in the MS KB about it and I believe there is a good white paper on it as well.
