Slow folder access with large amounts of files -xp pro

I have a small network working peer to peer file shareing.
After installing XP pro on the workstations if i use "my computer" or
"windows explorer" to look though the folders, if the folder has 1000+
documents or a large amount of files/folders in the 500+ range XP
takes a large amount showing me the flashlight/searching before
displaying the folder contents. aside of reorganizeing all the
documents and folders is there any way to change this behavior of XP?
