Slow file transfers on Remote Desktop

Our file transfers are slower than "Cold Tar" between our office and home
computer using Windows Remote Desktop. Both desktops are HP Media Center
PCs with Intel dual core processors running at upper end speeds. The Remote
Desktop seems to be snappy until we start working with Windows Explorer on
the host machine, which is also displaying the client machine drives as
folders (network mapped drives?) in the host machine's folder panel.

At this point it takes forever for the host to display the client folders
and the time it takes to transfer files from a host drive to a client drive
(or vise-versa) is agonizingly slow! These are both top-end computers and
the file transfers should be executing in a flash. Any thoughts on what our
problem may be or is Remote Desktop just this inefficient?

How many files are in the folders? I've seen this with Windows explorer when
there are too many files in a single folder....windows explorer will
actually "stop responding" when trying to get a directory listing through
RDP.
