I am trying to copy a 620kb file from my desktop to my usb key. It takes
over 10 minutes. If I try to copy to my Novell network drive it can take
over an hour. I already applied hotfix KB931770-x64. I have 4GB of ram and
a good processor. I have already tried everything I could find on the
internet and I am just about ready to say "Screw Vista". I have work to do.
I don't need to be a beta tester for Bill.

Ok, I discovered something. And maybe this will help. I am trying to copy a
folder with multiple folders inside it. If I just copy the files it goes
right through. So the problem, like everyone else has said, is the damn
"Calculating time remaining..." crap. Just when is SP1 coming out?

JW,

I specifically got the 64-bit version so that I could use the full 4 Gig.
It reads correctly.

But thanks.

I assume then that you have no performance problems when copying files
between folders on the host system.
Is CPU usage excessive when copying files externally?
Any indications in the event logs of what is causing the delays?
Any indications of memory/paging problems during the transfers?
Any possibilities of anti-virus software causing part of the problem?

Ok, I transfered a zip file and it was fine. It took less than a second to
go over to my usb drive. If I try to copy the unzipped folder it takes
exponentially longer. Likewise, when I used xcopy to copy the zipped folder
it went right over, but when I tried to copy the unzipped file it wouldn't
copy.

Fixed. I turned off Defender. Works fine now. I assume that Defender is
looking at all of the subfolders, etc. And it takes forever for it to figure
out whether I've got malware.
