Slow File Sharing

Ben

I have a Windows 2000 server network with multiple
Windows XP Professional clients. File sharing for the
most part is flawless and fast. There is one box
however, a new NAS from Dell, that I'm setting up public
folders and backup directories on. I have the public
folder as a maped drive in the network logon script.
When users attempt to use this drive it is extremely slow
but is sometimes immediate. Also, when going through the
run command it is slow, this way too, sometimes it works
immediately.

Netbios is disabled and it doesn't matter whether the
resolution is through IP or DNS. It is registered in
WINS. Network speed is fine, no excessive connections or
traffic. All Windows updates are on all machines,
including the clients.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks in advance!!

Enable Netbios and see if that makes a difference. Even if it is registered
in WINS with Netbios disabled it won't work.

Netbios was enabled initially when the issue started
happening. Disabling it actually had no effect that I
could see.

Thanks!!!

Does this NAS box have a gigabit NIC? I have seen ome issues with the auto
detect not working correctly and sometimes you need to manually set it for
the network type. IE 100mps Full Duplex etc. You might want to check with
Dell for any updates for the card. If you are physically on this box is it
slow to connect to other resources on the network?

Yes, I have set the speed to 100mbs and the same issue
exists. Also, when sharing to other network resources it
is virtually instanteous from the box itself. The
drivers on the nic card are brand new and I have seen no
know issues regarding them or the hardware.

Thanks for all your help in this matter!!
