SLOW File Opens in XP

In Windows XP Home Edition, when I use the "Look in"
flyout in the "Open" dialog box to open a new file
(this is especially bad in Word), it can take multiple
minutes for anything to happen. At first, it looks like
a complete hang up, but if I wait long enough, it
eventually works. It's so bad, a "Not Reponding" message
appears at the top of the Open Window.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Does anyone know what's going on, and how to fix this?

Thanks,

Ed.

Yes I have had this problem and I think it is related to
explorer.
I have posted today a message for help but no replies
yet..
Sorry not to solve your problem but at least you know
someone else is in the same boat.

I'm not sure if your exact problem matches mine, but it
appears that mine was exclusive to Office XP products
used with Windows XP (Word, Excel, etc.) when used with
drive mapping for Network locations. The problem occurs
when "Reconnect at Logon" is set but you don't actually
connect. Office XP tries to access each mapped drive
multiple times, even if you don't want to at the time.

The solution that worked for me was to eliminate the
Drive Mapping and instead set up the network connections
using "My Network Places". I got this help
from "Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 822621"
(www.support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;
[LN];822621). Check it out.

I hope this helps you too.

Great !!

Same symptom

The zap mapped drive fix worked !!

I had a drive mapped to a VMWARE hosted Win98 device that seemed to be locking the system up for ages before it realised it was not present
