slow file copy from SBS on one machine

I have a very perplexing problem.

I have an SBS 2003 server with a Win 2000Pro client which has very slow file
access from the SBS. File copies from SBS to Win2K are very slow compared
to the other PCs on the network. all have 100 NICs at autosense

File copies from say a WIN 98 PC to this W2K is fast.

I then did a fresh install of W2K on the machine but still no change.
Fnally I installed WIN98 on that machine and file copies fromSBS were fast.
(This hardware initially came with W98). The PC is a P600 Compaq deskpro.
Is the motherboard Intel chipset the limiting factor?

I have another cheaper AMD clone with W2K and that has fast access!

I have disabled SMB signing on the SBS and w2K.

The fast access when W98 is loaded - rules out hardware glitches - right?
The only thing left to do is get a new 100Mbps NIC. But is there something
that I am missing?

Is the NIC on the 'cheaper AMD clone" different than the W2k PC you are
using?

Could be driver related. Change the NIC and see what happens. Put the NIC
from the "cheaper..." one into this one and see what happens.
