slow downloads

My modem is a 56k. When I start to download files the
speed is normal but it starts to slow down until it
reaches around 2 kbs. How do I keep the connection speed
up? I don't have any other programs running that would
need the internet connection.
 
There is absolutely nothing you can do to keep the connection speed up.
(this of course assumes the wiring in your house is OK).
