slow download

When I first got DSL a year ago, newsgroup pictures would
open nice and fast. At some point over the last year they
began downloading quite slowly and I don't know why.
Occasionally I will get onto a thread where they open with
the original speed, then suddenly go back to very slow.
What is hanging them up and how can I fix it? (Windows XP)
..

The more people that use dsl the slower it will become.
Internet slowdowns may be caused by traffic, how many
people are accessing the same site you are or going
through the same server at the same time. How much
bandwidth did the site you are viewing purchase?odds are
it is not on your end.

Uhhh he's talking about newsgroups not websites. I doubt his ISP / Newsgroup Provider is having an issue of not having enough bandwidth. Anyways, he might want to run adaware & a current virus scanner to make sure he has no spyware/trojans. If his issue continues he might also want to call his ISP / Newsgroup Provider & complain

try going into properties for your hard drive, to tools
and defragmenting. if there are too many fragments, it
slows down download speed from your end. this isnt the
only problem it could be but its the easiest to fix and
its worth a shot

If your news server is having bottleneck issues, it doesn't matter which
thread in which newsgroup you're in, they will all have problems. See if you
see the same issues when connecting directly to the MS news server at
msnews.microsoft.com - if your downloads appear OK, then you know the
problem is with your ISP. If downloads are slow from the MS server also,
(and assuming that your email and web surfing have not been slowed down)
then you have a problem with either your news reader or your system. Try a
different newsreader - there are several free ones that can handle binary
attachments, like Forte's Free Agent.

PS - if you're using Outlook Express, try tools/options/maintenance/clean up
now/compact. If that doesn't help, next do the same except remove message
bodies then compact. IF problems still persist, try unsubscribing to a
problem newsgroup, then exit OE completely. This will delete the data store
used by OE. Restart OE, resubscribe to the same NG. A new database file will
be created. If speed is OK, then you had a corrupt data store.
