Hi, I am running i.e 6 on a 7 year old computer running windows 98se. Just
recently my internet connection has become very slow, i am using dial up
which I know is slow anyway but it is considerably slower than it should be.
Also the 2 little green computers symbols in the task bar keep stopping and
starting, whereas when downloading something they always used to stay on all
the time.Spybot and Adaware have both given the computer a clean bill of
health, and Norton 2006 has revealed no virus. The strange thing is it only
runs slowly on int.exp. or downloading emails. when using the computer for
other tasks ie. photo editing, word processing or printing documents it runs
like a dream considering its age! Any help would be much appreciated. (could
it be a modem problem?)

How long have you had Norton on it?

Norton tends to "Intercept" things for scanning, such as filtering email for
viruses and HTML for pop-ups etc... so the possibility I see here given the
age of the machine and W98 is that we're on a "Download a bit, scan a bit,
download a bit more" trip with the online stuff. If you have email scanning
enabled in Norton turn that option of, it does nothing much anyway since
Norton will jump on any virus you try to open unless it's a new on that's
not in the definitions, and if that's the case email scanning won;t likely
do any better. Similarly try turning off any pop up blocking and see what
happens. Norton systems generally impose a very high load on resources,
especially if you have less RAM available, so try minimizing it's
involvement and see if that helps.
