Slow connection to shard folder on a workgroup.

I have 3 systems on a workgroup. 1 is hosting a shared folder with
roughly 6gb of data in it. Every time I attempt to open any of the sub
folders from the other 2 systems it takes roughly 30 seconds. Is it
possible to make those systems cache that information?

Notes: Each system is showing that it's connected at 100mbps, and all
are using XP Home SP2 with 2.0Ghz procs or higher with 512 ram. When i
runs MS process monitor it shows the system query for each file is
successful.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Bill,

How is this 6GB of data organised? Is it lots of little files / folders, or a
few big files / folders? Are all of the sub folders directly in the root folder
(where the share points), or is there a sub sub folder structure?

Just opening a sub folder shouldn't take any time. The sub folders shouldn't of
themselves represent too much network traffic, unless each sub folder has lots
of entries (lots of files or folders). But you can have a lot of sub folders in
6GB.

I'm thinking that you might want to check your name resolution and file sharing
protocols, and make sure that those are solid, before looking for problems with
the data itself.

Paranoia is not a problem, when it's a normal response from experience.
My email is AT DOT
actual address pchuck mvps org.

All of the sub folders are directly on the root of the share. The folder
that I seem to have the most trouble with contains roughly 4gb of pdf
files with no sub folders. I can open the folder and about 30secs later
the data will display. I can close it and reopen it and it will again
take about 30secs to display any data.

I also made sure the particular system we're talking about was the only
one accessing the share. And I mapped the folder as well and still had
the same delay.

If the links you gave me have no effect, is there a way to cache that
data after the initial opening of the folder.

Thanks a lot
