Slow client-server access

I have a database file containing only tables with data
sitting on a server in a small workgroup. The client PC's
(having forms, queries and reports) have links to these
tables. When a query is executed from the client there is
great delay in getting the results and even to display the
form to enter the query parameters.

The server uses shared folders to give access to the PCs.

Can anyone tell me what the cause the delay can be and how
I can avoid it? The database size is quite small and
there are only 4 PCs on a 100Mbps network.

Have a look at this:

I only did the subdatasheet, name autocorrect and permanent link parts and
it gave me a spectacular performance boost.
