Hi, Craig.
You might start in the Startup folder. Click Start | All Programs |
Startup. If there are programs here which you don't want at all, then use
Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs to uninstall them. If there are
programs which you want to keep, but not to run at startup, move them out of
the Startup folder.
Many programs give us options within their own install process to choose
whether or not they are to run each time WinXP starts; others offer similar
options when the program is running. Some programs also give us the choice
as to whether they will put an icon in the Notification Area when they are
running. Make sure all those are set as you want them.
From a Run prompt, type msconfig.exe and press Enter. Use this utility to
configure your WinXP startup.
Finally, the Notification Area itself is somewhat customizable. Right-click
on the clock and choose Customize Notifications... You can choose - icon by
icon - to Always Show, Always Hide, or Hide when Inactive.
As you probably know, the Notification Area is the new name for the part of
the Taskbar that we used to call the System Tray (or SysTray).
