I had the same problem recently. I discovered via the Task
Manager that one .exe file was using 99% of the CPU for
the vast majority of the time during and after boot-up.
This was happening even when no programmes were running.
Application launches and Internet Connection were really
slow.
I noted down the weird .exe.files name and searched
Microsofts website for it to make sure it wasn't a system
file or anything critical. As nothing turned up I searched
the Hard Drive for the File name, located it, copied it to
floppy just in case and deleted it from the Hard Drive.
Computer is now running perfectly again.
