New Dell P4 PC. 2.4 Mhz. Win 2000 Pro. Takes at least 5 minutes to
load. A LOT of files load at Startup, I know why some of them are
loaded. Are there any known files that load that slow it down and
are not needed?

Is there a utility like Msconfig to temporarily disable some not
needed? Some load in the Run keys in the Registry but removing them
there is permanent.

Also I installed Zone Alarm and with it loaded some things don't
work including anything in Start > Run. Remove ZA and Run works. I
don't have it checking e-mail.

I downloaded ZA ver 3.7.202 today and will try that tomorrow, it's
my daughter's machine.

Would appreciate any ideas.

Look here for information: http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

The services that you might be able to change are pretty well all listed
there, just read and decide for yourself. There is no msconfig in W2K
but you can download the XP version and it will work fine. But you
should see if you can change unnecessary services from "Automatic" to
"Manual" first. To do that you will go to your Control
Panel>Administrative Tools>Services. There you will see what you might
be able to change. WARNING! Some stuff is essential to the proper
operation of the pc! Don't change stuff if you aren't sure. The link
provide above has good info on what can be changed, it geared for XP but
it's pretty well the same thing for W2K. Also, don't change a pile of
things at once, change a few things (1 or 2) at a time then reboot to
see if things are OK. What you want to do is have as few "Automatic"
items as possible, I think I have about 6 of them. When you change them
you should change them to "Manual".

Thanks John, very helpful. I forgot to ask before how to backup the
system files and how to restore them if needed. I couldn't find it
anywhere. The only documentation that came with the machine was for
the initial setup. There may be more on the CD, I'll have to look.
I made the 4 Startup disks from the CD.

Thanks again,
