Recently my computer has started taking an extremely long
time to boot up. If have run defrag and done disc
maintenance. I also have checked for viruses, but found
none. Any ideas to shorten my startup time?

work around: Click start/run/type msconfig; General tab
click Selective startup, Startup tab unclick some apps
you recognize and that you don't really MUST have ready
to go as soon as you boot. this will present a warning
when you re-start say yes.
More permanent fix; I got Speedboot(tucows Downloads I
think?) this allows you to pick what you really need
stated and the time between starts(When you look at the
menu in msconfig all of that stuff tries to start within
a few seconds) I don't start the whole MS Office suite
anymore as well as a few others and I have set 1.75
sec.between starts. I had it a little more than a month
and saved a bunch of time overall and start-up is
very,very,very.... consistent

Shut down your virus program.

You know, this is the kind of advice that scares me... you should
always have your AntiVirus on and never shut it off. If you shut it
off, you may never catch viruses that infect the boot sector of your
hard drive, and that will cause them to spread / activate / etc.

Unknown (@prodigy.com)should learn about things before he/she posts.

Lots of bad advice in this group, unfortunately. It's particularly
disturbing since, after lurking here for awhile, it seems to me that many
posters are pretty much clueless and will follow anything they're told.

It doesn't scare you, you're already scared. I don't have a virus program on
my system and never had. I have NEVER had a virus in 20 years. If you follow
these News groups you'll see that by far more problems are caused by virus
programs than anything else. Symantec and Norton love it when you fear
viruses: They sell a lot more of their garbage.
If you keep your system updated, keep the firewall on, and NEVER open an
attachment on an e-mail from someone you don't know you won't get a virus and
I'll bet money on that. Follow these newsgroups closely and you'll see. Of
course if you already have the fear in you you'll stick with your virus
programs. BUT, show me one just one case where I virus detect program actually
found one and prevented a problem not caused by someones carelessness.
(Opening an attachment on not updating or not having a firewall). Document
anything that saved the day by a virus program. Then, document the problems
caused by them.

Read the above response.
