Can anyone help please?
For some time now, it takes about 3 minutes before the
Windows jingle plays during boot-up and longer before
everything is ready.

Any ideas about what might cause this slow-down in
booting up? Closing down is still very quick.
Thanks. Derek

I had the same problems - I got some tips from the NG - like turning off
the file indexing as well as a few other things (I cant remember sorry) bit
I went from 2.5 min to 55 sec!!

Have you looked in Event Viewer for clues?

Make a note of the precise text of any error message. You can always look at these in Event Viewer. Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID: and Source Description are important.

Try turning off some of the "fluff" that XP loads at
startup. Use the SAFE configuration found at this website
http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

You might also try a Start, Run, then enter "Rundll32.exe
advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks" without the quotation
marks, of course.

Did these to my wife's laptop and wow! what a difference
it made. Be patient with ProcessIdleTask thing, it might
take 10 - 15 minutes to run. Watch you hard disk light.
