I have an HP ZT1175 notebook, with 512mg of memory. It
takes a long time to boot up and someone told me that
having too many notification icons can cause the
problem. Is this true, if so, how do I fix it?

.

so can having a lot of pictures and some of the camera
software -
mine fast boots but the hard drive runs and runs and
runs - apparently between the cd burner program, the
photos I carry in it and the Sony Imagemaker software,
and windows 2000 wanting to keep a registry of 500 meg so
it can get to a picture rapidly, it runs almost 10% of
the battery out just starting the machine.
I also heard that a registry cleaning helps.

Move photos off the machine onto a disk helped some.

I think what your well-meaning friend wanted to say is that if you have too
many programs that start with Windows, that will add to your boot time.

To see what else is starting with Windows, go to Start > Run, type msconfig,
then click OK. You have just opened the System Configuration Utility. Select
the Startup tab and you will see everything else that starts with Windows.
Now your task is to decide whether you want all of them to start with
Windows.

To help you decipher some of the cryptic names you might find, have a look
here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.php.

Proceed very cautiously here. If you make the wrong decision you can cause
your system to become unstable. Just take your time and learn about each
startup item before you take any action.
