Slippery drive settings

Hope I'm in the right group, but I'm having trouble keeping my settings
stable. In particular, when I go to the "properties" setting on a drive under
My Computer, then check the box labled, "enable CD recording on this drive,"
when I come back to the same spot at a later date, I often have to recheck
the box. Any answer or help will be appreciated.

What's a Slippery drive? Just kidding. ;-)

Enable CD recording on this drive
This setting turns on the built-in CD recording features included with
Windows XP.
Third-party programs sometimes disable this setting.
You can only enable CD recording for *one* device at a time.

SYMPTOMS
When you have a computer with more than one CD-R or CD-RW disk drive, only
one disk drive may enable you to create compact discs. If you click to
select the Enable CD Recording on this drive check box for either the CD-R
or CD-RW disk drive that is not enabled, the computer seems to apply the
change, but the disk drive remains disabled. When you examine the CD-R or
CD-RW disk drive properties, the Enable option is not selected.

CAUSE
This problem can occur because the creation of compact discs in Windows XP
is limited to the first CD-R or CD-RW disk drive that had been specified at
startup.

RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, change the physical location of the preferred CD-R
or CD-RW disk drive on the device chain.

Thanks, Wes, I think I'm beginning to see the situation. Since I continuously
install little "third party" programs, the fault probably lies there. Since
my <D> drive is a DVD burner, and my <E> drive is the actual "CD" drive, I
need recording enabled on both drives. I have Sysinternals Process Explorer
10.6. I am not a "master" of using that helpful software yet, but do you
think that or some other monitor software could shed some light on which 3rd
party software programs might be changing my settings? Again, thanks.

Hi Ron,

This sentence:
Third-party programs sometimes disable this setting.
Should have read like this:
Third-party CD/DVD burning programs sometimes disable this setting.

XP's CD burning application does *not* allow you to burn DVDs.

If you're burning DVDs then you're using a third-party DVD burning program.

If you're using a third-party DVD burning program that program probably also
allows for burning CDs.

If you're using a third-party burning program you do not need Enable CD
Recording on this drive enabled on either drive. Unless you want to use
XP's on one drive and the third-party program on the other drive.

Enable CD Recording on this drive is for XP's CD burning application only.
It does *not* need to be enabled for a third-party program to work. In
fact, I use Nero and their Help says that you need to disable the Enable CD
Recording on this drive.

If you're using XP's CD burning application, you can only enable CD
recording for one device at a time period.

If you want to be able to record at will on both drives, use a third-party
burning program.

I have Nero and when I open Nero it scans the SCSI/IDE bus looking for
drives with Recorder capabilities. Nero also has an option to Choose
Recorder. I only mention Nero because I have it and I am not familiar with
any other third-party burning programs.

Wes,

I'm in the process of updating my Nero 6 now. I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks.

Ron,

I have an *OLD* version of Nero, 5.5.8.0. I see where they have Nero 7 out
now. Have fun.
