Howdy all...

Well, got my son's machine up and running after major Trojan hit. We have
the old drive that got wacked, there are still folders, some files and all
the programs (kinda weird they're still there) but, all his Word docs for
college, iTunes, other music files (hundreds+) and movie folders are empty
just empty folders.

The only thing I ran on this drive after we removed it was AVG, so I'm
hoping maybe we can recover files. We don't need to recover anything else.

Can anyone recommend a freeware/shareware or low/reasonable cost data
recovery software program? Or are they a waste of time?

tnx.

It's not a waste of time if you want the files. ;-) However, there is a
strong possibility that all the Word documents and media files were
infected and that's why they are gone. If you do manage to retrieve any of
the data, I'd scan for viruses before copying to the clean installation. I
use Easy Recovery, but it is expensive. I believe you can download a trial
which will show you if any files are retrievable.

One small point that may not be relevant to your case: the 'Folder is
Empty' mouseover message will pop up if you don't have any permissions
on the folder. I recovered a friend's music folders after her profile
was corrupted by taking ownership of the folders which appeared to be empty.

Thanks Malke. Just after I posted the question I found your earlier response
to another post. R-TT looks good and lets you try it out (trial will only
find files under 64K without buying it)...so I'm gonna give that a go
today.

I figure I really have nothing to lose at this point :-(

Thanks guys/gals!

So the folder would show, but with nothing appearing in it?
How do I take ownership of the folders? This is something I've not done.

Thanks!
Turned out not to be the case though, I recovered abt 350 records with
PCInspector. Now, trying to see if any are still good. Some of the jpgs
won't preview.

ah well, back to the front lines
