Slightly OT: 3rd person games

There are some really nice looking game environs
out there now, except nearly all of them are 3rd
person .. which is beyond stupid. Why the crap
don't they stop doing that? I totally hate that sort
of game. Example: Syberia2 has a girl who walks
into the woods following this little "god-like halo"
that I am suppose to use to tell her ( and her cutsy
doggy ) where to go. I can't pan the screen, so I
can't see beyond a very short path. I managed to
walk her into the woods, and now there is no way
to get her out ... and no game. I'd hate to be a
young kid trying to figure this moronic situation out.
The visuals in that game are really nice. I would not
pay $2 for it. It would be a great game in 1st person
mode ... just looking at the scenery. These 3rd
person games make me feel like a lab rat in a maze.

Like what? There are tons of FPS games on the PC. Console ports are
often third person due to control issues, but a lot of those have
first person options on the PC.

Thief's optional system works well... although I spend most of the time in
1st person, sometimes for the sake of checking visibility 3rd person is
useful. The Max Payne games worked well in 3rd person, and probably wouldn't
have worked well at all in 1st person.

It's not a dog, its a Yuki.

It's not a dog, its a Yuki.

Well, I've got both of them trapped in a lodge by the river
with a bear outside. How the heck do I get her out of
there? Maybe I should ask a 6 year old kid. She would
know. Are there any fish? I cast a lure for 20 minutes
and nothing hit. Beautiful visuals. It is a sin that the game
itself is so arcane. It just throws away a lot of fine coding.
I can also see that she is talking to her "Yuki", but not
in English. Her lips are moving, but no voice except at
the door .. "I better close that door ..." over and over
and over. The writers of that game should be hauled
before the public and told off bigtime. It is a shame.
All of the atmosphere of that environment is lost
because of the 3rd person robotic actions of the
girl in the non-game. It is schitzoid. The human environ
is pathetic while the scenery is pure art.

You should have found out by now what fish the bear likes, where those
fish hang out, and what lure works best to catch them. There are books in
the lodge, etc. As for voice-synching, I had no problems with this. Make
sure you patched the game and all your drivers are up-to-date.

Sorry, youre not that bright, is all. The game IS, as you say, visually
brilliant - and its a great game all-round. If you had problems navigating
in Syberia2 - try solitaire, its much easier. Not only does the mouse icon
TELL YOU what can be done, but its common sense. Use it.
As with the catching the fish thing - read the books. Bears only like
certain fish - so catch it. Hard eh? My God.

It is a stupid format. I should be able to pan the screen
and explore that environment. Weirdly, I think it appropriate
to be able to assume the role of the main character and
interact directly with the other characters. It claims to
be a 3D environ, but I can tell that they don't have
perspective changes when moving through the woods.
It is an older style 2D environment running on an
archaic engine. Benoit should find himself some better
coders, and work with the Quake engine at least. There
is no perspective anywhere in this game. The girls size
never changes. She doesn't approach or retreat with
perspective applied. It is written on the level of Kong.
And I think it is time to start reporting that to the buyers
so they don't go pay $40 for a $10 game. I even have
to run it in Win98 emulation mode on my P4, or it
goes into extremely slow motion. Basically, it has
no AI .. no trigger points - no objectives .. a very
strained "game puzzle" that is uncoordinated. It is
Kong revisited with great art in the background. On
the Quake engine, this game could easily have rivaled
Far Cry or any of the FPS games .. and thereby
reached the entire gaming market. It is a disaster.
