slide transition sounds not working

I have recently upgraded to xp home edition and installed office 2003. Most
of the slide transition sounds on new or existing presentations don't work,
both when previewed or applied to a slide; however, these sounds do work if
loop sound is selected. I've done a few experiments: exactly the same problem
with office 2000 powerpoint installed on xp; my powerpoint 2003 works fine on
windows 2000 professional; I have minimal other software on my PC. Is this an
xp problem and can I sort it? Please help as kids use slide transition sounds
used a lot for home-made animations

Thanks. Sorry I don't know much but I'm just talking about the simple sounds
-cash register, chimes, breaking glass etc that come as part of the programme
and are available in the drop down box for slide transition sounds and can be
applied to one or all slides in the presentation. I would expect that the
sound is embedded in the presentation rather than linked (no idea whether is
different in the case of the looped sound which does work). In the options
menu where you can change the size of the files to be linked (set at 100kb)
it makes no difference if this is increased or decreased as to whether the
sounds work or not. I just want to apply a crash or whoosh to a slide
transition and not anything more complicated like music throughout a
presentation.

How were these sounds inserted?

Not sure, but Play sounds across multiple slides (A WAV runs through it)
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00047.htm might help here. It just
depends how the sounds were inserted and set up. We need more info from you
there.

Ah, yes, then those should be embedded into the presentation, Louise.

I just tested here in PPT 2003, and the transition sounds work fine. I'm not
sure what is happening, especially since you say it will work if you check
the "loop sound" option. (I initially thought maybe the speaker volume was
turned too low!)

Anyone else have any ideas?

Oh, Louise, have you applied SP-1 to Office 2003? Go to Help/Check for
Updates to install Office 2003 SP-1 if you haven't.

Thanks, I have tried installing SP1 but that has made no difference . I also
ran detect and repair but no additonal installations were needed so I think
the software is installed OK. As an additional piece of info, if I add the
basic sound e.g. applause to a simple animation of an object and then play
the slide show, the sounds work intermittently e.g. the first and third time
I run the show but not the second. Some sounds such as applause and bomb
(the latter is greater than 100kb) work better than others. I also get the
impression that the sound is less well reproduced if there is an associated
more complicated transition e.g checkerboard, but not entirely sure. The
volume is turned up to max. The sounds all work fine when I go into the
office 11 /media folder they are stored in and click on them. Reassuring that
this is not a universal problem with xp home and office 2003 but very
frustrating.

I wonder if it's got to do with your sound card?

Maybe try updating to the latest version of Direct X for your system and
also update your sound drivers. You'll have to go to your computer mfg's
website for the sound card drivers, but for Direct X, you can try here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=2

Looks like the latest is DirectX 9.0c End-User Runtime.

I usually suggest turning down hardware acceleration, too, but I've no idea
if it would help in this case. It's sure not going to hurt to try it,
though.

Thanks for all your help. I'll have a word with the guy that built my
computer we can try the sound updates and hardware adjustments you suggest.
