I am using PP2000. I can add a theme to a slide, eg Dad's Tie, and I can then change the theme to another from a drop down list. But I cannot remove it altogether. Would be grateful for any suggestions.

In PowerPoint 2000 you can have ONE design per presentation, even though
there are workarounds. If you are trying to remove the background design on
a particular slide, right-click an empty area of your slide, select
"Background", click the "Omit background graphics from master", then click
the "Apply" (NOT "Apply all").

Every presentation has a template or master that it's based on; if
you started the presentation using the "Blank" option, that doesn't
really mean that it has no template, it just happens to have a very
plain one.

This explains how you can create your own default blank template that
you can apply to presentations when you want to get back to basics:

Create a default "blank" presentation with your own defaults
