Wow. 2.3MB to emulate a slide rule. Forget calculators and computers,
these slide rule thingies are great. Now, if I could just find a *real*
one, I could "rule" the world!

Muh-Wah-HAAHAAHAA!!!

hehe. . . You just flunked the "Are you an OLD geek" test.

I'm 41 and went online in '82 on a Cyber mainframe using CP/L and
punchcards. Does that count? :-)

Silly child! :) Punchcards were a new-fangled modern invention back in
the heyday of slide rules.

Yeah!? I'll bet you're not a proficient with an abacus as I am! :-)

(And, I can count fingers like nobody's business!)

Say what you will about slip-sticks, I never had one have it's
batteries go dead in the middle of a chemistry exam! And I've still got
my big triple log-log stick and a Little Giant circular slide rule
around here.

Or even the mid 1800s - Jaquard Loom.

I miss me Fowlers Circular Sliderule

Ahhhh, but will it fit in my pocket protector? ;)

I've got a 6'' plastic rule somewhere that fit in mine for a long time(till
I could afford a $495 HP-35)

No you are still in Pampers :-))
But I do have a couple of those old relics of the past
and know how to use them ;-)

Pardon me for butting in, but I was a young nerd long before geeks
even existed. This discussion has reminded me of a mathematician's
joke for those who still remember the principle behind a slide rule.
The joke is pretty old, but then, so am I:

When the Great Flood finally subsided, Noah released the animals from
the Ark, and as they were leaving he reminded them that they were to
go forth and multiply, as the Lord had commanded. Two snakes
approached Noah and said, "We are deeply troubled that we cannot obey
the Lord's command to multiply, for you see, we are Adders."

Noah thought for a few minutes, and then he went into the forest and
cut down some small trees. Noah used vines to tie several pieces of
the tree trunks together to make a flat raft-like surface, and he set
this on top of four legs he made from the stumps. Then, Noah lifted up
the two snakes and placed them on top of the resulting platform. "Now
you too can obey the Lord," he told them, "for, as everyone knows,
even Adders can multiply on a Log Table!"

Slide rule, another one of the modern antiques,
nice to look at but not much use otherwise.

Not long ago I saw the owner of a small (mom and pop) grocery store
using a slide rule in one of his aisles. I asked him why and he said
that he could set it to multiply by the factor required to get a given
markup; then he could just glance at it to read the appropriate prices.
It was faster than punching those annoying buttons on a calculator.

They were great things. As young engineers they set us apart from the crowd.
No one else used them. You could lay one on the table to impress the girls.
Now everyone knows how to use a calculator.... but a slide rule was
something else!
