Using PPT 2002. Did View / Header and Footer and put slide numbers on
every slide. They appear. Insert a JPG picture and resized the
picture to cover the entire slide. Slide number is behind picture.
Sent the picture to the Back with the Drawing toolbar and slide number
still does not appear. Move JPG up and I can see the slide number,
but I need the picture to cover the entire slide and see slide number.
Any suggestions?

The Footer is on your Slide Master, which is the bottom layer of each slide.
Everything else will be placed on top of the Slide Master. A couple of
approaches might be:

1. Add a new Slide Master and use Format > Background > File Effect >
Picture to place the JPG behind the Footer. Use this Slide Master for just
this one slide, and apply the Blank slide layout.

2. Add a text box on top of the JPG for just this one slide and type the
page number.

3. Consider not showing the Slide No. on this one slide.

Instead of inserting the image to cover the slide, try "Format",
"Background", "Fill effects", "Picture". Browse to your picture and it will
insert as the background of the slide. This should allow the Slide Number
to be visible (I think).

Bill's suggestion's a good one.

If you need to do this often, and with presentations that are already
created (ie, you don't want to go through a whole bunch of manual steps each
time), try our Image Exporter add-in. More info/free demo available at

As a side-effect of a totally unrelated issue, it handles slide numbers in
way that makes them appear atop other shapes on the slide. A minor bug or a
minor feature? All depends on your POV, I guess. <g>

Note that the same isn't true of footnotes/dates/etc. Just slide numbers.

Hello Christopher,

As others have indicated in their replies, the Slide Number is on the
Master and all header, footer, and objects on the Masters print behind any
objects in the Slide.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that PowerPoint should
provide a option for controlling whether or not specific items on the
Masters print behind or in front of items on associated slides, don't
forget to send your feedback to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions)
