Slide Masters

I understand the concept of the slide masters but I am
missing out on the steps. In 2003, Do you create the
Title slide first? If I have a slide presentation, then
select, View Master, change the master, I lose the whole
presentation. Do you create the Master Slide first? If
so, how do you insert slides? Are the rest of the slides
considered Master Slides?

Help!

"Master Slides" are special slides. They are not in your slide presentation,
per se, instead they tell your presentation file how to format your slides.
To see your masters (both regular and title), do a View-->Master-->Slide.
Set up your backgrounds, fonts, etc. on the slide master. Then, insert a
title master (while you are still in the master view do Insert-->Title
Master). It will inherit the formatting from your slide master, but you can
adjust it as needed.

Now, to confuse things for you (the beginner), there are multiple slide
master pairs in PPT 2002 and 2003. So, if you are viewing the master slides,
and you insert slides, you are only inserting more master slides. To use the
masters and insert content slides, you need to close the master slide view
and return to your content slides. As you add slides, they will take on the
master formatting that you have designated.

If you want to read more, there are several articles out on the web that
teach how to create templates. Creating master slides for a specific
presentation is much like creating a local template. The articles I referred
to can be found at these URLS:

(That's not to say there aren't any others out there that are just as good.
These are just the first ones that come to my mind....)

Hope this helps!

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

The built-in help for PowerPoint includes some instructions for how to
create new (or customize existing) templates (designs, masters). Did you
find this information insufficient or too difficult to locate (we are
always looking for ways to improve our built-in product assistance)?

The main thing to remember is that editing/creating custom design templates
is just like editing a slide EXCEPT that you edit the Slide/Title master(s)
instead of actual slides (View -> Master -> Slide Master).

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important that
PowerPoint provide additional assistance about (or features which
facilitate the) creation and/or modification of PowerPoint designs, don't
forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end-result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).

Thanks Much! My problem was corrected by downloading
some update. The Master Slide wasn't copying over to the
other slides.
