slide layouts & designs not appearing

Just recently (in the past week or so), PowerPoint has suddenly stopped
showing the design templates or slide layouts in the right-hand side of the
screen. The box will appear if I select "Format, Slide Design" or "Format,
Slide Layout", but the box is completely blank. Scrolling over the various
templates and layouts does little (except show the title of the design or
layout).

Is anyone else experiencing these problems? Is there a fix? (I've done the
"detect and repair" twice. I've not had much success with that.)

Lots of folk have this problem. Someone posted this week that it didn't
