A backup HDD (with no operating system) FAT32 installed as
a slave is detected in the bios during start up but does
not show in explorer. Drives D & E are the DVD and CD. My
C drive is NTFS.

Thanks

You need to right click on My Computer, choose Manage and in the Computer
Management screen find Disk Management under Storage. You should find your
driver there, either format it or give it a drive letter.

Control Panel - Admin Tools - Computer Management, select Disk
Management and look lower right for the graphic of the drive. What does
the partition show?

If it is 'Healthy - Unknown' then it is likely that something has set
the 'Hidden' bit in its Partition table entry. If a drive letter is
shown, then Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys - and its My Computer
- Drives page to make sure this letter is checked as visible. TweakUI
from (if you have installed XP SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP
