Curious as to what kind of sound card you have. As I've complained in
this forum a couple of times already, my microphone volume automatically
slides itself down to near zero level whenever I try using Skype or any
other app requiring a mic. And I've discussed this issue with about a
dozen other posters who are having this problem in Vista, but still
can't figure out why only so few of us seem to be experiencing it . . .

I only have Skype installed on this laptop and
not my other Vista machine. On this laptop, it uses
Sigmatel sound. The funny thing, I have *never* gotten
my sound to work on this laptop until I use the XP drivers.
It has been this way since Beta2. Didn't matter that Device
Manager indicated I had Sigmatel Vista drivers installed,
or, that Windows Update said there was an update- they
never would work... until I installed the XP drivers.

Anyway, the sound is great and Skype seems to work well.

I've had this microphone problem with both my onboard Sigmatel as well
as with a Creative SoundBlaster Audigy SE card--both using drivers that
are supposed to be for Vista. Does your experience suggest that, if I
try using XP audio drivers for my onboard Sigmatel, that I *might* not
have any sound problems at all?

It *might* be better. The only way to know for sure
is to try. You can always reinstall the Vista drivers
if it doesn't work out.

I'd be interested in knowing what happens.

Thanks, Michael. I'll probably give that a try, then, sometime soon when
my currently hectic schedule allows me time for some puttering around.
I'd sure like to solve this problem of not being able to use my
microphone with Skype.

Michael:

Well, I gave it a shot, but no joy. The speaker sound was so muffled and
indistinct using the XP drivers that I didn't even bother trying the
microphone because trying to listen to Skype testing playback would have
been useless. And although I also discovered that new Sigmatel drivers
for Vista became available for my mobo on 2/14/07, I tried them out,
too, but they're no improvement over the previous Sigmatel drivers,
either. Durn it all.
