Does anyone here have experience of using Skype, the P2P internet telephony
app? Positive? Negative?

I use it pretty often
Overall experience is positive

Pros
- P2P telephony ... quality doesn't deteriorate as number of users increase
- Easy to use
- good voice quality

Cons
- Not a freeware ... The current beta is "freeware" but stable version
will not be a freeware
- Drops calls quite often
- Echo problems if the participants are using speakers instead of headsets

Actually it would depending upon your bandwidth.
- Easy to use
- good voice quality

You forgot to mention end to end encryption for both voice and text

I have never seen anything that intimates this. Can you post a reference
please? They plan to introduce premium paid services AFAIK but the basic
part will always be free.

Haven't had this problem during one hour discussions.
- Echo problems if the participants are using speakers instead of
headsets

Most programs will do this - people need to use either phones or headsets.

Per my initial analysis, it takes 5-6 KBps. I guess it should work on
low bandwidth. I am on broadband and have used it with people on 28.8
kbps and the results were good.

Agreed ... Thanks for correction.

Per my definition, any software whose all features are not accessible to
general users is not a "freeware". Per FAQ on www.skype.com and various
interviews of executives of Skype (can be found easily via search
engines), they plan to keep PC-PC 1-1 calls free, but might charge for
conference service.

PC - Phone calls charging sounds fine with me. As you mentioned, they
plan to keep the basic version free, which is good :)

It was quiet for few days days. Did even used it yet... and today
This stuff has been spotted by the firewall of my company doing heavy port scans.
-> Immediate uninstall !
