Skype v.1.0 - For Windows

Here excerpt of their website :
"Skype is the next phenomenon from the people who brought you KaZaA. Just
like KaZaA, Skype uses P2P (peer-to-peer) technology to connect you to other
users - not to share files this time, but to talk and chat with your
friends.

The technology is extremely advanced - but super simple to use... You'll be
making free phone calls to your friends in no time!"

From the developers of Kazaa, Skype allows one to have VoIP
conversations using mike and (optional) headphones, using the same P2P
technology originally developed in Kazaa.

From the website:

"What is Skype?
Hello. We’re Skype and we’ve got something we want to share with you.

We’ve got a simple bit of software we want to give you. It’ll let you
make free phone calls to your friends all over the world. And we don’t
want any money for it. It’s free.

You could think of us as the big, free Internet telephony company. We
prefer to think of ourselves as a big group hug, even a present. Yes…
that’s it… we’re a present… but without the ribbon.

Our software’s quick and easy to install. Just download Skype,
register and within minutes you can plug in your headset, speakers or
USB phone and call your friends. The calls have excellent sound
quality and are highly secure with end-to-end encryption. You don’t
even need to reconfigure your firewall or router. It just, you know…
works.

You can also use our SkypeOut function to make calls to friends who
only have a landline or mobile phone anywhere in the world at local
rates. You can even transfer files of up to 2 gigabytes.

Now what do we ask of you in return? A bag of seed? A back rub? The
keys to your city? No. We just want you to share us with all your
friends. Why? Well, you can only speak to your friends for free on
Skype, if they’re also using Skype. So the more people you share it
with, the more people you can talk to. Simple when you think about it…
so, is it a deal?"

IF it is any good then it's a pity......

Interesting that they specify these OSs as minimum requirements since the
release notes indicate the following:

"bugfix: fixed crash on Windows 98/ME"

From the FAQ:

Can I use Skype with Windows 98 or Windows ME?
Because it hasn't been fully tested, we have not yet certified Skype for use
with these operating systems. Skype may work with Windows 98 or ME but we
cannot yet guarantee compatibility. Some WinME/9x video (and possibly other)
drivers tend to use 100% of processor for their needs for relatively long
periods of time. This can cause the audio quality to degrade significantly.
In addition, WinME/9x does not offer full unicode support, which means that
some things may not display properly. Skype does not work on WinNT at the
moment. We may support these platforms in the future and will make any
future announcements on our website.

Interesting indeed. Has anyone here on a '98 system actually used
Skype ? If so then can they tell us what they did and how they
worked ? Anyone ?

Regards, John.

I've installed it on WinME but I'm having a little trouble convincing
others to sign up, so I have no one to talk to. It didn't crash my system
or anything.

Will it work in any country....... like Australia?

Yes. It is voice over IP, not dependant on phone line (except for Internet
connection).

Yes. Supposedly it works even on a 56k connection, but then it's not very
good.

Yup. W98SE here and Version 0.98 runs just fine. My son is running it
on ME and it also works good. The Linux version is (supposedly) still
a little buggy but there are reports of it running under/in Wine.
