Skype malware infection

Just received this message from someone called Security Monitor on Skype
telling me to go to http://www.update-alert.org/?q=usasec and get malware
removed from my computer.

Didn't take it seriously at all. Was wondering whether everyone has received
this naive message?

It a scam. This site when you access it will show about 20 infections
even after the scan with a genuine spyware scanner. They just trying
to sell more crap to you..

What sort of message: a spam email; a popup in your browser; a popup
in the system tray; a messenger service popup; something from the
Skype software (if you have it); or something else?

I found it hilarious. The page simulates a scan of your computer using
JavaScript. Completely fake! Then you are invited to buy a spyware and
adware removal tool. What does that say about their software when they
have already lied to you? It's either completely useless or malware.

Yes, it's likely the malware generated the message! Is it a popup
window? If so, get Process Explorer from www.sysinternals.com
(redirects to a Microsoft page) Install, run it, and you will see an
icon in the toolbar which can be dragged over the window to see what
process owns it. Once you know the file name, you can take steps to
remove it.

If you are going to talk on Skype (which I do), make sure it is as tight
as you can make it. I do not allow ANYONE to contact me other than on
my List of Friends.

If you are not sure how to do it, Skype has a website and you can learn
about it from that. Do not reply to these strangers......and put them
on a "block" list.

Skype is a VOIP system, isn't it? In other words, a way of using the
Internet as if it were a phone line. I don't know why you'd be using
it to talk to strangers about security problems and you don't say
what those problems are.

The OP's problem does not appear to be anything to do with Skype. It
looks like a typical popup message from some malware he's unknowingly
installed.

Security issues are real. Messages from unknown sources, or sources
claiming to be something they are not, enticing you to visit a
dubious website are invariably scams.
