I've got lots of Skype contacts, but Skype is only for Windows 2000 & XP.
Is there another similar freeware program that can be used for friends who
only have Windows 98 (first edition)? TIA.

I have used Skype and I have Windows 98se. The person I was talking to
told me he had used Skype with other 98 users too, although I cannot
vouch for the first edition. Give it a try, you have nothing to lose.

I know this doesn't answer your question but I have pretty good
success using version 1.0 in 98SE for reasonably long sessions but
Windows eventually fails. I may be delusional but restarting Skype from
time to time seems to improve Windows' reliability but I haven't
bothered to test, really. I use both computer/computer AWA the OT
dialout service. My use is not mission-critical, though, so the
unreliability merely is an inconvenience. Skype's recent update leaves
artifacts on the screen and doesn't seem enough different, functionally,
for me to determine whether that issue may be sorted out.
