Skipping a link to a URL on Power Point startup

I have a file that was given to me by someone else, and he must have linked
to a file out on the Internet. The problem is, when you launch the .ppt, it
attempts to get the object in the URL from the web. This pops up our
corporate "user id and password to get to the Internet" dislogue box, and you
cannot do anything at that point.

Is there a way to disable the attempt to get the object from the web (like
how you can skip the AUTOEXEC in Access by holding down the shift key when
you launch the database)?

Thank you

Hi there

What is the object? If it's a picture or text edit->paste special might
work...?

See if this helps:

PowerPoint connects to the internet unexpectedly

Well, the problem is that when I open the ppt, it immediately trys to go to
the internet. So, I don't even have an opportunity to click on the slide at
all. PowerPoint opens, and it immediatley goes to the web.

Strange.

Thanks in Advance.

Did you read the entire page? About halfway down, it says:

"PowerPoint attempts to connect to the internet or tries to connect to unexpected
sites when you open a presentation."

That sounds startlingly like what you just said is happening. ;-)

Steve,

I understand that, and I know WHY it's happening, but I want to know if
there is a way to "fix" this prenentation now that it does that over and over.

See, the only way I can view the presentation is if I right-click on the
actual file and select "Open with" and select "Internet Explorer". In that
case, I can view the presentation, but I cannot "escape" back to the editing
mode where I would be able to fix the issue.

So, I was wondering if there was a way to bypass the attempt to go out and
get the linked image.

If in fact it's caused by a linked image, you'll need to delete the image and reinsert
it from a "clean" copy of the image (go to the original site it came from, rightclick,
save image as, and save it to the local hard drive. Insert that rather than
copy/paste/drag/whatever from the browser.)

You may need to wait for it to open ... PPT may wait until the network times out before
it gives up. That could take 30 seconds or more.

Alternatives: try opening on a box with a network connection or try opening on a box
with NO network connection at all. PPT/Windows might be swift enough to skip the
attempt if there's no connection at all.
