Is there any way to size an AutoShape (in PowerPoint 2000) using pixels as
the measure, rather than inches?

Lon,

Powerpoint always displays a presentation at the "current desktop" resolution...(in powerpoint 2002/xp you can specify
what resolution, but thats another story.)

So, in short....No

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

PowerPoint doesn't provide the functionality that you are looking for.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that it's important
<why?> that PowerPoint provide this kind of functionality, don't forget to
send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also WHY it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).

In a kind of backward way, yes. The free PPTools Starter Set (
http://get.pptools.com ) includes a Units Calculator that'll tell you how big
the currently selected shape is, in several unit systems, and will also tell
you how many pixels wide it'll be on screen during a screenshow at the current
system's resolution.

Of course, if you play back the show at a different display resolution, the
pixel count will be entirely different.

Steve,

Excellent. Thank you. PPTools Starter Set's Units Calculator is almost
exactly what I was looking for.

I want to mark off an area on my computer monitor that will have the same
height and width as a TV monitor, so I can put all of my PowerPoint activity
inside that area. Then, I'll use CamStudio (a freeware screen activity
capture program) to convert my PPt to an avi file. And finally, I'll use
Ulead DVD MovieFactory 3 to burn my presentation to a DVD for display on a
TV. I know (from an earlier posting in this newsgroup by Tim Kohn) that a TV
monitor displays an area roughly equivalent to 640 x 400 pixels (my own TV
seems to display just a little less). So I'll use the Units Calculator to
mark off an area just smaller than 640 x 400, put all my presentation
activity inside that area, and that should make my presentation display
nicely on TV. (I know the TV version will not be interactive. But that's OK,
because I'll be creating presentations -- featuring Microsoft Agent animated
talking characters -- that are designed to be viewed from start to finish,
without pauses or inaction with viewers.)

Sometimes close enough's close enough. <g>
