Size Software to Monitor Screen

I am trying to do something very simple, but cannot figure out how. My monitor screen is 13"X9 1/2" and my display software is 11 1/2"X 8 1/2". I want to size the desktop to be large, to fit the monitor screen. Otherwise there is no point in having a larger monitor.
I have gone to Display>Appearance & Setting, but there is nothing that controls the size. I am looking for maybe a key stroke that will work with the arrow keys, to widen and lengthen.

Use the controls on the front of the monitor.

David - thanks for your reply. This monitor does not have the controls to do that, my other did and it was easy. Any more suggestions?

Sure you have a monitor and not a laptop type screen.
