How much space does Vista use on initial installation on a clean disk?

The general recommendation is install the operating system on at least a 20
GB partition.

Allot at least twenty gigs for the operating systems and space it needs to
properly function. The software will take up very roughly 6 or 7 to even 9
or 10 gigs [depending on version etc. basic to ulimtate .. 32 bits to 64]
... but you will want to leave room for files created while operating, 3rd
party software that insists on installing to the OS's partition, updates,
space for the defragger to operate properly and so on. Yes, it is a bit of a
space hog, but it's feature loaded; besides, harddrives these days usually
have plenty of space so it would be easy to accomodate it. Twenty gigs turns
out to be just a small sliver when your harddrive is 200GB.

If you think you will be installing a lot of software, allot about 30GB for
just the OS.

Thanks, Saucy,
I'm thinking of purchasing a whole new system.

i have used 21G right now, after about 2-3 weeks of use, and some programs,
like Nero, PSP, and some other progs installed (total size of program files
folder is 4.2 G right now, but can't tell what is was at start).

Thanks, Protoncek,
I usually keep my extra programs on another partition so maybe it will not
grow too large,

Hmm, let's see. Vista Ultimate, Office 2007 B2TR... my utils folder...
several utils installed separately. That would be... 18.4GB.

Personally, I don't see any problem with space required by Vista. I wouldn't
even if it will take 100GB over time. Reasons are:

1. Free space is wasted space. Except if it is planned to be occupied by
something within HDD guarantee time window. One HDD for OS, one HDD for data
which is good from both reliability and speed points of view. Well, maybe
RAID1 for data to be more confident. Taking in account sizes of modern HDDs,
this way I always have more than enough space for an OS or two and whatever
programs I will want to install.

2. From backup time perspective, I don't care if it takes all nigt if it's
automated.

I saved a 30 GB NTFS partition on a Dell Dimension 4300 for Vista if it will
work. There is some hope that the RAM memory can be upgraded from 512 MB to 1 GB
for $175; and I could get a nVidia FX5200 128 MB RAM videocard @ AGP 4x for $41.
Already have a DVD burner installed. Might need a newer sound card, but don't
know what to buy yet. The machine is already dual boot with Win ME & Win XP Home
over 2 hard drives.

Thanks, Alexander,
I don't worry about startup time,
I just don't want to run out of space.

i forgot...1G from that goes to hibernation file, but i don't know yet if
hibernation can be disabled and thus that file deleted...
i think that right after installation all vista was around 7-8 G, but soon
after has risen to about 15G...who knows why...maybe drivers etc... for now
i have 60G partition reserved for vista testing and still quite a space to
waste :-)

Yes, it can be deleted. If you go to disk cleanup and select 'clean
hibernation file', it will delete it. This also disables hibernation.
However, I don't know how you get the file back if you want it back...

good question...maybe it will re-create itself when you put pc into
hibernation...
